My new house was screaming for a modern bathroom renovation. This makeover was one of the first tasks I tackled when I bought the house. Renovations are better suited to the summer months as there are more daylight hours but I was keen to crack on with mine.
Having a nice big family bathroom is important to me in my home. When I bought my most recent house, I wasn’t put off by the size of the small bathroom. Instead, I saw past that and saw the potential in the house, the house also has 4 double bedrooms.
Home Bathroom Renovation
The original bathroom in my house was a very small room which had just a basin and an old cast iron bath.
Enough space to stand by the basin and open the door. Which just about left enough space to get into the room and shut the door.
Old Bathroom Style
The separate toilet was in a small room directly next to it. I knew straight away that I could make this situation work better for me. Also having a small downstairs toilet I knew making the bathroom and toilet one whole room upstairs would make a lot more sense.
Modern Bathroom Renovation Ideas
After speaking with my plumber and builder who would be doing the work for me, I knew what my options were and how I could achieve the room that I wanted. Always do your research before hiring a tradesman or company to do the work for you. I checked our MyBuilder for my area, but you could do a simple google search of ‘best plumber in Winchester‘ (or in your location) to see the companies in your area for the job, and which are most recommended.
It was not going to be a small task, but I would still have full access to the old bathroom while the work was being done, just not the toilet.
Which was fine as I have a downstairs toilet as well.
Walls in the landing were knocked out along with some built-in cupboards to make the landing area bigger. Walls were checked first to ensure no supporting walls were being compromised.
Taking down walls and renovating usually involves a lot of rubbish to dispose of as well. Some residential waste sites charge for disposing of rubble and hardcore so I found skip hire a much more affordable option. We had the skip delivered to the front garden and filled it up as we went along and then had it taken away once it was full.
The wall between the toilet room and the bedroom was knocked down.
The existing ceilings and floors were all removed and the room was completely stripped and re-plastered ready for the work of assembling and installing to start.
The new pipework for water and the new electrical wiring was all put in place and walls were chased out so pipes could sit under the surface and be flush after they were tiled.
The bathroom tiles, adhesive, grout and tile edge trim I bought from my local B&Q.
I was happy with the quality of the tile and the ease of cutting them too. I did after find some other bathroom tiles which I loved but it was too late to change my mind, as the tiling had already started. One thing I would suggest is to mood board for a while to ensure you get the exact style and look you want.
A new window was needed as the space shape was being changed so the original window wasn’t practical. Plus with it now becoming a bathroom I needed a privacy window. The window was installed with a satin finish obscurity, so there were no designs on the glass but still obscure.
Modern Bathroom Design
I later went on and hung a huge bathroom mirror on the new stud wall between the rooms. This was above the bath tub and made the room feel even bigger. Mirrors are a great way to make a room seem larger and brighter.
A large storage cabinet went on the wall to house all the clean towels and products that need to be in the bathroom. A number of various other decorative ornaments and bathroom styling pieces were added.
The old bathroom will end up becoming either the study or a single bedroom. Even a walk-in wardrobe is an option.
For anyone reading this and wondering where to start with a bathroom renovation, take a look at ManoMano for bathroom suites and designs you like. Spend some time mood boarding and looking at inspiration before you commit to buying anything.
The only change I wish I made was the tiles. I later went on to find similar tiles but with a gloss finish rather than matt. I feel that glossy tiles would have given it a better finish and I still think this but have no intentions of changing anything bow.
Good luck if you are giving your home a makeover. See how I cope with the stress of renovation.

Hi, it takes so long so there’s so much progress already! Its really helpful to me. Cause I am going to remodel my bathroom next month. Thanks for the sharing this at the right time. Keep up with good work.
Great tips! I always want to renovate or remodel our bathroom but i don’t know where to start and thanks to you i got an idea
This is awesome. A true testament to the power of paint and hard work… and a few accessories. So happy to hear that you’re enjoying your renovation so much.
Re-tiling your home will be a good job if you get a good set of glue and adhesives for it.
Well, the new bathroom looks so awesome. Nice work
Really a piece of helpful information you explained. This is the gorgeous post for designing any kinds of bathroom. Its help me very much. Thanks for your share. What is the minimum budget for remodeling my house?
Investing in a professional plasterer may seem like an unnecessary expense when the nearby contractor is doing it for cheap. What will you do if it falls off? You’ll have to take help from professionals which means that you’ll be paying for the same job twice.
Wow! Amazing result!
Thank you for sharing!
I really love your interior designing ideas and those pictures. I would love to incorporate those into our house. I’ll be looking forward to more such stuff from you.
I like the tiles you chose. What brand of tile adhesive or glue did you use? Those are very important in replacing tiles in the house.
Looks awesome! Did you have to do much cleaning after?
i liked reading this fantastic article, it motivated me to renovate my own bathroom which was in bad shape, due to the recent lock down i couldn’t get material nor the plumbing people
You went with minimalism cause of the small size of the toilet. It looks great.
it’s like woowwwwwwww!!
I loved this post
I think this will be good for our house. So lucky I saw an example.
Adding any freestanding bathtub is great. Can you please direct me which to pick: Acrylic or Cast iron tub. Any suggestion will help me decide.
It’s not easy to think of the transformation from your old bathroom to a new one, especially when it’s a compact one. Pretty sure it took you time and research to get something this beautiful. Seeing pics from your old bathroom to a new one is just soothing.
I love your suggestions here
